All organic compounds that pass through the FID are burnt in the flame. Some can produce detector contamination, resulting in the following:

• noisy baseline
• reduced signal to noise ratio
• negative dips after peaks or baseline drift with changing pulse voltage

If these symptoms are found, clean the collector electrode. Refer to the manufacturer’s manual for more details on appropriate cleaning procedures.
